                                    Verduner Altar
                             This masterpiece forms part
                              of the treasury of the huge
                               abbey at Kloster neuburg
                                (see p163). Its 51 panels
                               were completed in 1181
                              by Nikolaus of Verdun. The
                                    abbey itself was
                                 consecrated in 1136.

                        Vienna’s university was
