he opened the right side pocket of the jacket with a pen. There was a rolled up wad of
money inside, Unity Currency. He stood back up and scratched his head saying out loud
“Not surprised they took everything else and left the money” The Forensics wagon and
Coroners truck arrived and Doc Harrigan got out.
“Its Jaden Whelks Mary; looks like a professional killing, but Lomax’s not
going to like what I found in his right pocket” he told her. And he held it
open for her to see.
“Oh; this is going to cause a heck of a ruckus. You did right to get a
Media Block on this one. You look a little pale, go sit on that step. Ah;
here’s Lomax’s car now.” Felix did as he was told. He felt ashamed
reacting as he had, but he’d never had a killing happen so close to
home. Dreck came over and squatted down beside him.
“I know how you feel; remember when they came across Larry Givens in the Bedor district? I
was living with Marcia just two doors away, never heard a thing, and I puked myself silly for
days. Lomax’s taken this one hard too. He was married to the guy’s Granddaughter for
Maker’s sake!”
“Thanks Dreck, Lomax is going to take it even harder when he checks the guy’s right jacket
pocket. He’s looking now. Uh oh! Get ready for fireworks!” Lomax shot up and started into a
tirade at dispatch. Dreck and Felix just looked at each other and nodded. Forensics was all
over the place with a fine toothcomb. It could be days before all the results came through.
Lomax was called over to one of the Forensic team who was counting the currency he
picked up one of the notes and handed it to Lomax. He looked at it and frowned, handed it
back and had the technician put it in a separate evidence bag. Lomax turned and headed
towards the two of them with a gloomy look on his face.
“20,000 Unity Credits and a 100 Groat note; sound familiar Krank?” he said when he
reached them.
“Yes; the signature payment method of the Caveat Brigade. If Whelks has had dealings with
them the Syndicates would have been none too pleased. Did you recognise the calling
card?”
“The Assassins Federation; yes, that means we’ll have a devil of a time finding out who killed
him. Whoever they were left no obvious signs. Not even a trace of DNA, so the techs tell me.
Charlie; can you see if any of your informants, sorry, “informal acquaintances” has heard
anything. This makes the third killing in as many months” Lomax asked Dreck. Dreck nodded
and rose to leave, but turned to Krank and took the older detectives hand to help him up.
“You sure you’re OK. Maisie said you sounded strange over the comms?” he asked Krank
“I’m fine; you do as Lomax says” he waited until the young detective was out of earshot
then turned to Lomax “This one’s not going to look good for the Chief. It’s bad enough that
this guy had the Chief’s Grandson roped into a gambling debt. It’s going to look like the
Chief had him popped!” he said to Lomax
