“Leave it to me, something serious must have happened. You get back to filing the reports.
If He’s involved we might have a visit from the Force! Leave them to me also!” he said and
went back to his office. He retrieved his pocket communicator. He pressed in a sequence of
numbers and waited. It buzzed and he switched on the screen. A text message was all that
came through in response to his code. It was encrypted. Rummaging in his desk drawer he
pulled out a small black book. Working slowly he decrypted the message.
“Internal problems. Hostile takeover. Destroy all documents relative to 39822” He read to
himself. He went over to his hidden vault and opened it. He took out several small recording
cards and a ream of print. In the corner of his office was a small, well-disguised, compact
disintegrator. He placed the cards and ream inside and closed the door. A light came on and
a high pitched humming sound filled the air. The light went out. He would need a new
partner if this went any further. Unless; that is, someone wiped them both out first.
Syndicate politics could be extremely ruthless. If some of their “clients” knew about his
connection with the Lucerne family, He Josiah Splitt would be the first to be “liquidated”
among the assets. Telford Hagron was currently storming toward the local transport hub
thinking “How could that fool have been so stupid?” He felt a sharp pain in his neck and fell
to the floor. Two burly individuals picked him up and bundled him into a black limousine.
They got in closing the doors as the vehicle sped off…
In Victor’s room; a tall Vahamat was standing in the room talking with Victor. She
turned when Felix and Sylvie entered. She smiled and introduced herself. “I’m Denarius; I
am a Neuro Reconstructionist. That means I specialise in the kind of inductive therapy that
regenerates damaged nerve tissue. I heard about your son and the damage caused by the
Gantrax venom while on a sabbatical in the Gildar system. I’ve only administered the first
session of the treatment, but, as you can see, your son has responded well to the
treatment” She let Sylvie approach Victor and talk with him. Felix approached Denarius.
“You are a long way from Unity territory; forgive me if I’m suspicious but, your kind were
none too welcome around here only a few decades ago” he said
“Your suspicion is understandable for a “policeman”. Actually I have been here before,
probably forty years ago, I was captured by the Black Guard and forced to administer to the
wounded. They guarded my presence jealously; if the Guardians found out they would have
been punished. When the Dark Lord left and the Empire fell over to the Unity I was released
and sent to my home world to do service in the teaching hospitals there.”
“Forty years ago… Oh yes; I remember now, there had been an uprising in one of the labour
camps on Riskelion. The Guard were sent in to quell the riot and were beaten back. The
Nephel Guardians ordered the whole system locked down. Too many lives were lost in the
ensuing fight. My Uncle was among the first injured to return to the Garrison Hospital in
Mercy Creek. You mean to say you were working in Mercy Creek then?”
“Yes; your uncle wouldn’t have been General Hephaestus Mortimer Krank by some chance.
You do have a look about you of him. He was one of the first patients I had that needed
major surgery.”
“Yes that’s him. He was sworn to silence on the matter by his superiors. But after his
retirement he came clean to the family. It was he that made me join the Constabulary. I had
