“I gave up on that game ten years ago, must be one of a few still in circulation. I haven’t
made any since. Caveat Brigade you say. Hmm…; did hear something about a hit being
planned by one of the Syndicates on the “Grape Vine” a fortnight ago, but nothing since.
The origin was The Kinray Group’s “twitchers” Hagron and Splitt. I take it that’s where the
money trail ended then.” Carlo said winking. Dreck was about to speak out when Lomax
stopped him.
“Alright Carlo, I’ll fill you in, but you have to come clean about what you know”. Lomax
recanted everything that had happened and what they had surmised. When he described
the Assassins work Carlo was visibly shaken.
“There’s only three killers use that style of hurt The Vasilly triplets. I heard about them from
young Tommy in 79. That lad’s got a lot of worry on his shoulders. He was on Luxor Prime
when the three of ‘em “Graduated” from the Foundation. Highest honours they got. Evil
buggers too.” Dreck interrupted Carlo
“Tom Hasperand; known as the Song Bird of Korva. When did he end up here? I thought he
was upstate in Hedebar Prison” he looked at Lomax for an answer but he just shrugged and
asked Carlo to continue.
“If they’ve been hired by the Kinray Group then it has to be a Syndicate cleansing. Do you
want me to keep a discreet ear on things Steve?”
“Sure; you have my private number, don’t put anything you get through regular channels”
They made their leave and headed back to the auto cab stop. Dreck could see the cogs
turning in the look on Lomax’s face. “If this is the start of a Syndicate war the Chief is going
to go ballistic” he said as the cab arrived. He punched in their destination and the Force
payment details and they buckled in. “We have to keep a lid on this. Anything like this hits
the Media and there’ll be a panic like the crisis of ‘99”. The cab sped off through the evening
murk. Carlo fired up his monitoring equipment and then roped in his floor neighbours when
the chatter got heavy.
A matter of Loyalty
In the offices of Hagron & Splitt Attorneys at Law; there was no sign that anything
was out of the ordinary. Their receptionist, a bubbly little blonde Delevan was filing her
nails. The phone rang and she answered it.
“Oh; it’s you; I’ll connect you to himself now” she flicked a switch on the exchange and
routed the call through to Hagron’s desk. She settled back to finish her nails when the
shouting started. Hagron was screaming down the phone. The shouting stopped and his
door burst open. He stormed out of the main door slamming it behind him. Splitt appeared
from his office.
“What was all that about Shirley?” Splitt asked
“He got a call from you know who and just flipped!” Shirley answered. “I haven’t seen him
this mad except when he was handling that case for the Jakarta Syndicate last year!” She
added.
