EDUCATION
ne of the College’s largest departments is the
Division of Education. Mr. Phil Larsen teaches
Secondary Curriculum and Methods. The goal
he has for this class is that the students will be
capable of setting goals and maintaining
discipline for their students when they become
teachers. One of the different aspects of this
class is that the student is placed in a classroom
which pertains to their area of study (such as
math, English, or social studies). This past fall
the students were sent out into the public
schools in the area such as Oak Grove Middle,
Palm Harbor Middle, and Largo Middle
School. The idea is for the student to observe
the middle school teachers’ methods of
teaching and administering discipline. The
ultimate goal is for our students to be allowed
to teach one or more class periods in these
schools.
Another student responsibility is preparing a
two week unit which involves creating lesson
plans, homework assignments, and also a test.
Students are encouraged to make a lesson plan

so much more
effectively than
if I had just read
about it in a book.
