CON»VEN«ING
u lass, for the next three weeks, you will be assigned to groups of states. During these
three weeks each group will take notes and research their individual states to find
c out about economic and political stances and positions at the Constitutional Con
vention of 1787.
Many students at the start had negative thoughts about the Convention but as the weeks
progressed optimism became more apparent.
Anyone walking past lecture room C probably heard such things as, “We want slav
ery!” “We don’t want slavery!” “How can we decide anything when we don’t have a govern
ment?” “The Northern and Middle states should separate from the South and form their
own country.” Many students left lecture room C with signs of age written across their
faces, worry lines on their foreheads, and hoarse voices from the constant yelling
and arguing between states.
The 1984-85 sophomores weren’t the only class to experience this. Twelve oth
ers before them, and possibly many more to come will also have to learn about
the frustrations that America’s forefathers went through to develop the nation.
The actual convention took place in 1787, but the one at RHS was started
in 1972 by history teachers Robert French and Wally Sommers, who said they
borrowed the idea from teachers in Hastings.
The reason for starting this program was, “to give the students insight into
the actual Convention of 1787,” stated Dale Kinney, history teacher. Sean RHODE :
Bradley, sophomore stated, “I thought the Convention gave me experience
d l
with the parliamentary system.”
