Round and Round
During rehearsals, each person must practice his own

willingness to learn and willingness to listen,” commented Pat
Culver, co-director of the musical “Carousel”. Culver directed
the acting and the staging. Dwaine Price directed the music and
singing. The play had one preview and four actual
performances.
“I saw the movie and the actors and actresses portrayed
it more like a sappy, sweet, soap opera. The interpretation by
the cast that we had was much stronger and less soap opera
like.
“Besides a few technical problems, the play went well,”
said Culver.
One of the problems that they faced was trying to block
love scenes with a male lead, Senior Chris Thackray, that was
6'4" and leading lady, Senior Beth Selinger, that was only 5'2".
“He was tall not only to Beth, but also to the other male
roles,” said Culver.
The play highlighted a few specific talents such as the
ballet scene by Junior Sue Gillespie and Senior Jon Stodola.
Stodola played the young Billy Bigelow and Gillespie played
Louise.
Another added attraction that was used was the dressing
of the stage with actors rather than using a complete set. Instead
of a real carousel, live dancers riding hand-sewn horses were
used.
“The one thing that really pleased me was that people who
are not normally drama students were involved such as sewing
horses and building sets,” said Culver.
