Close games highlighted the season’s opener as the
            Barons split with the Stuttgart Stallions. Bitburg shot
            44  percent  in  the  opener,  winning  58-53.  Lee  Bates
            was  sturdy  for  the  hosts  in  the  opener  .  .  .  getting
            nine  field  goals  and  high  scoring  honors.  Kenny
            Smith’s  15  rebounds also aided in  the win. Saturday
            found the Barons ahead with 25 seconds left.  .  . but
            a last-second field goal turned the tables in the 55-53
            loss.

               Dennis  White  burned  the  nets  with  27  points
             on  Friday and 29 on Saturday as the Barons had
             an easy time of it with Mannheim.  In the opener,
             no other Baron hit double figures. On Saturday,
             Lee Bates hit  17 to help in the effort.  Both games
             saw the Barons in control by halftime.
