uring the fast-paced college year,
students, staff, and faculty alike sat down at Cathcart to
refuel their bodies and rest their minds. More than just a
place to casually socialize, however, the college dining hall
had a busy schedule all of its own.
The staff kept dinners interesting. On important
game days, the student life department often encour
aged students to dress casually and to wear their spirit
shirts. Occasionally, evenings took on themes, from the
food to the centerpieces. In January, the social committee
sponsored a "Home Sweet Home" evening. The Western
themed evening included a meal of hot wings, barbecued
ribs, corn bread, and homemade brownies and cookies.
Throughout the meal, a faculty/staff ensemble entertained
with a variety of folk songs.
Small groups often met in the solarium for book
signings or lectures. Christian author and illustrator Janet
Willis came to speak on the personal trials (losing several
of her children in a car accident) that led her to produce
