A question raised the most by the students at REIS is,
"why do we need 16 credits of PE and only 10 or 15 credits
of some academic courses?"
Changing the requirements has been an issue for
awhile now and the board has now come out with an
edition of the possible changes.
The 200 credits needed for graduation will not be
changed, but the classes needed to attain the credits
might.
Some of the proposed changes, for example, would
be upping the English credits needed from 30 to 35 thus
every student must take a minimum of 5 credits (one
semester) of composition and pass English 1 and 2. The
possibility of changing the way to obtain Personal
Communication credits by offering other classes than just
the standard Per Com courses was considered. The possible
courses could be Debate or Public Speaking. The Fine Arts
10 credits needed would remain the same except that
these credits could not be obtained by taking a Foreign
Language.
Other course changes would occur in the science
department switching from 15 credits to 20 credits. A
student could avoid having to take Consumer Education
if he/she could pass a consumer ed competency test and
would still receive the 5 credits. The proposed changes
started with a series of meetings with the high school
department chairpersons, the school administration and the
assistant superintendent of curriculum. They began this
project in February of 83 and proposed the recommenda
tion in early May 83.
