"Sum m ertree", by Ron Cowen, is a play meant to
show the tragedy of war by exploring the death of one
soldier. The audience becomes deeply involved with
this man in a series of flashbacks which are meant to
give the background necessary to cause the emotions
felt in a similar real life situation.
"What's it like to be dead?"
"Five minutes is a damn long time. Think what can happen in five
minutes . . . in one minute . . . in a couple of seconds."
Young Man: Haven't you ever liked someone simply for what they
are not for what they can do for you?
Father: There's time enough for that later.
Young Man: It was an accident I didn't mean to hurt you.
Soldier: You made this mess, clean it up.
