Despite Seemingly
Overwhelming Obstacles
The Cougars Press To The
After losing five key players to graduation, many coaches
would find the effort of rebuilding a team to be a long and
daunting task: one which could take years of recruiting until
finally the top is regained. Under the leadership of veteran
Coach Del Wubbena, the Cougars were molded from a large
group of freshman and a small group of returning atheletes.
Returning senior Todd Kelly joined the team after completing
the soccer season as sweeper. Using his knowledge of Coach
Wubbena’s coaching style, he helped lead the practices by
running routine drills as an example to the freshman players.
Even with their lack of college-level playing experience, they
held their own against all opponents and routinely out-
rebounded other teams. Over half of the team were freshmen
players; individual improvement contributed to the success of
the team. By working constantly to cultivate their skills, they
attained a cohesiveness which is the hallmark of all great
teams. Managing to overcome some rather large obstacles the
team had a winning season. Dan Edwards, the team manager,
said that even though the Cougars lost some very close
games, the maturing of the team was evident in their
increasingly better quality of play and in their relationships to
each other.
During a timeout in the home game against Pensacola Christian College, Coach
quickly goes through some defensive and offensive plays. Although the team was
ahead several points most of the game, the men were unable to convert their foul
shots into points. In the last quarter of the game, tension filled the air with the fans
shouting their encouragement as the Eagles gradually pulled ahead to win (87-82)
in the closing moments of the hard-fought competition.
Beating the opponents to the basket,
David Sec takes his shot. Andy Whitlock
blocks out in an effort to grab an
offensive rebound if it becomes
necessary. Using their height to the
advantadge, the Cougars consistantly
out rebounded other teams. They are
always ready to react to any situation in
which they may find themselves.
The gymnasium vibrated with
anticipation; the stands were full of
spectators. The Cougars took on rival
Trinity Baptist College of Jacksonville,
FL, during the Cougar Classic
Invitational High School Tournament.
Adding to the emotions of the evening,
junior Shonn Brown takes it to the hoop.
Defeating Trinity Baptist before an
enthusiastic crowd of high school and
college students was just one of the
highlights of the year for the Cougars.
