" .. .1 just did it for fun, to try it out, see what it was like. I'm in
speech and debate, and I did poetry one night and I loved it."
          Sophomore Jamie Welch

                      "1 took poems by
                      A.E. Housman and
                      I wrote narratives
                      at the beginning of
                      each poem, told a
                      little about the
poem, recited it, and put a little
action into it. I just did it for fun,
to try it out, see what it was like.
I'm in speech and debate, and I
did poetry one night and 1 loved
it. I decided I'd keep on doing it.
I eventually wound up at state. I
like poetry a lot more than 1 like
debate. I feel like I'm more in
control with poetry and I'm bet
ter at it. I went to districts at
Papillion. I made it to finals which
shocked me. The top three from
finals got to go to state. I stood up
there waiting, and they called my
name as first place so I got to go to
state. It was basically like any
         other speech tournament, but we
had one round and there were
         two sections. Everyone would
do their poetry, and we would
         get rated for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th.
They took the top two from both
sections, and those two went to he day following a
finals so we'd go to finals and do T power outage
it again. I've never heard any Sophmores Becky Dusek

from Ralston; it (state) was pretty
exciting. I got to walk around the
(Lincoln) campus and meet a lot
of people. It was a lot of fun. I
didn't do very well, but I got to
go. I'm definitely going to do
poetry next year. I don't have all
of my poems selected yet, but I
know what I'm going to do it
         about."
