men’s basketball team started every practice with a devotional—
usually from the book of Proverbs. Proverbs 27:1 states, “Boast not
thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day might bring
forth.” The goal of the team was to win the regional championship,
but more important to them than winning was to put forth a
Christian testimony and to be an example to others. The team
emphasized their desires by living the team’s mottos: “Our best for
the Lord, TODAY.”
The team had three freshmen with whom the returning
players stressed the importance of working together in order to play
as one. “This year's team relied heavily on
teamwork. If even one person isn't ready to play,
it hurts the entire team,” said junior Anthony
Wilson. The coach stressed to his players that
teamwork was the key to winning. “You win as
a team and you lose as a team,” said Coach Del
Wubbena. When people looked at the team, the
team wanted the Lord to be reflected in them.
Also, they wanted to have the proper Christian
philosophy of basketball: play hard and win but
do it with the right attitude.
CELEBRATING A BIG LEAD,
the fans took out their keys and
jingled them to tell the other team
to “start the bus." Anthony
Wilson stopped midway down
the court and asked the crowd to
stop being rude-it was not the
testimony the team wanted to
present.
