On November 2,
2002, President
George W. Bush
visited Tampa
and spoke at the
Sundome at the
University of
South Florida.
There were
other numerous
Republican politicians present.
President Bush was there primarily
to support the re-election of his
brother Jeb for governor. He was
also there to energize the Republi
cans in this area and to clarify some
issues, like the war on terrorism. The
political club was able to get tick
ets, and many students from the
college went. John Gelsthorpe, presi
dent of the political club, along with
some others were able to get a seat
in front. "It was one of the most im
pressive political rallies I have ever
been to. The whole atmosphere was
exciting," John said. John was also
able to shake the President's hand,
which was his second time in two
years. Last time it was when Bush
was on his campaign trail in Septem
ber, 2000. The political club was
very involved with Jeb's and some
other candidates' campaigns. They
did things like sign waving to can
vassing neighborhoods to encourag
ing the student body to register to
vote. The political club also spent
election night at the victory party for
Mike and Gus Bilirakus, who were
both incumbents running for the U.S.
House of Representatives and the
Florida State House of Representa
♦ tive, respectively.
J* A group from the college
went to a rally for Jeb Bush
where they met many politi
cians, including Charlie Crist.
Julie Lynn, secretary of the po
litical club, said, “I think it’s good
to be involved with the club. It
helps me to be aware of what is
Carol Fleming 21
going on in politics and to be in
formed on issues.”
