Once again, the winter track team drew the greatest number
of participants. Many newcomers to MB and some of last year’s
freshmen plugged the holes left by graduation. Consequently,
this winter season was a year in which to build future teams. Since
the new fieldhouse had not been completed in time for the winter
season, the team again had to travel by bus each afternoon to the
Cranston Street Armory or ride in Doctor Odell’s jeep to Brown’s
     Marvel Gym.
The first meet of the season was the annual Relay Carnival
at the Cranston Street Armory. The Quakers did not walk off with
the meet, but they did show that they had to be reckoned with. In
Class B competition, the Quakers found the going rough. In a
triangle meet the Blue and White were crushed by the Barrington
Eagles, the class champions, and just managed to edge Central.
Against arch rival Classical High, Moses Brown’s trackmen again
fell to defeat; however, in the same meet, the Quakers rapped
Johnston High School. A third place finish was won in the Class
B Championships. Although the varsity failed to score in the
State meet, the JV team won in their division. The mile and two-
mile relay teams came through with the points in the Brown
      Interscholastics at Marvel Gym.
On the prep school scene the competition was equally tough.
At Tabor Academy the Quaker squad came up with a victory, and
hopes were high for a successful prep school season; but the next
meet, against Governor Dummer at the Armory, resulted in defeat.
Traveling to Wilbraham, the Quakers were edged out in a tight
finish. The New England Prep School Championships were held
at the Quakers adopted home track, Marvel Gym. Being on the
home field did not help the Quakers; they placed last in a field of
six. Seniors Ken Anderson and Ken Nyman turned in the best
times of their careers in their last indoor meet.
Although the season was not all glory, the team did have
several stars — Pete Wright, who placed consistently, Ken Ander
son, the team captain, and Kenny Nyman, to mention a few.
Many underclassmen, Mike Rotelli, Chip Lumb, Rick Berstingle, Issfcl
et al. helped the team, and gained needed experience. With a new
fieldhouse and seasoned material, the future looks bright for Coach
      Odell’s track teams.
