MAINTENANCE: MOMENTS IN TIME
A very large building set on an even larger
property, St. John's Prep takes up two entire
city blocks. Add to this the parking lots, the
sidewalks, the athletic fields. Then add on
what seems like miles of corridors, acres of
gym floor, thousands of windows, dozens of
bathrooms . . . well, you're starting to get
the picture. Maintainance of such a building,
especially one nearly thirty-five years old, is
a huge task. Each day about seventeen hun
dred people pass through the building, even
more for special events. Without a trained,
professional and very caring maintainance
staff, this could cause disaster.
We at St. John's are very fortunate. The
building sparkles every day of the year. Even
under blizzard conditions, the sidewalks
and parking lots are cleared. Leaks and
spills, overflowing garbage bins, peeling
paint — these quickly disappear almost as
quickly as they appear. Ms. Norma Fernan
dez is like the general of a kind, benevolent
army, assisted by her two chief assistants
Mr. Ian Keith and Mr. Gustavo Henao. Un
derneath is a group made up of nearly a
dozen who practically work around the clock
to keep the Prep in tip-top shape.
First time visitors, and long time Prep
people alike are always impressed with the
condition of our school building and
grounds. And such conditions make for a
safe, comfortable, pleasant learning environ
ment. All of us at St. John's Prep thank our
Maintainance staff for 'the moments in time'
they put into caring for our building.
