done? I had a book analysis for psy
chology-sociology, a career paper in
consumer skills, and an autobiography
for English.
Research papers and essays were
being assigned not only in English
classes, but in other subjects, too.
Many teachers felt that grammar,
punctuation, sentence structure, and
written assignments were the English
department’s problem while others be
gan to increase the emphasis in writ
ing.
The English department was trying
to develop an awareness of how im
portant grammar was not only in Eng
lish, but in all academic classes.
The English department planned to
address the fact that we didn’t have a
common writing experience through
out the department.
Freshmen learend the basics of the
well-constructed sentence in English I.
Sophomores and juniors mastered
well-constructed paragraphs and es
says in English II.
After completing these classes, stu
dents could take American Literature,
Advanced Composition, or English Lit
erature.
In the future, English department
chairman, Daryl Taylor wanted to see
a change in Advanced Composition.
He felt there was a need for an inter
mediate writing course as a transition
between basic and advanced composi
tion.

Critiquing copy and layout designs for beginning journalism
students, Linda Jensen discusses the positive changes that
could be made.
