“This is Your Brain on Sports” brainonsports.com
By L. Jon Wertheim & Sam Sommers (Crown Archetype)
Sports. They sure seem to make the world do some crazy things. Your team
wins a championship, so you riot in the streets. We wear lucky clothing in
hopes of a win. What are we sports fans thinking? This anthology takes a
fun and educational look into the sports enthusiast’s noggin. Wertheim and
Sommers tackle subjects like why we stand and cheer in hopes of catching
a cheaply made t-shirt from a t-shirt cannon? Why do hockey fans love to
see a fight on their home ice. No sport is left unexamined. The human psyche is studied thoroughly here,
all in a somewhat light-hearted way. I found this book to be a delight and one sports fans will cheer for just
like their perennial losing team.
“Out of the Rough” penguinrandomhouse.ca
By Steve Williams with Michael Donaldson (Viking)
Perhaps no individual in the sport, other than some golfers themselves, has
been more controversial or polarizing than caddie Steve Williams. “Out
of the Rough” shares some of Steve’s former employer’s most memorable
stories as well as some of Williams’s personal achievements. As you might
expect, Williams doesn’t hold back as he recounts stories from over 35
years of caddying for the likes of Raymond Floyd, Greg Norman, Adam
Scott, and of course Tiger Woods, for whom several chapters are reserved.
He always came across to this writer as a bit of a bully on the course. These memoirs soften that tough
image to some extent in an intelligent way. While the New Zealand caddie is as outspoken as ever, this
time he thinks before he writes. Golf fans will enjoy this excellent read.
