SMEC was appointed by Surbana Jurong to assist with inputs for the update of the
master plan for six secondary cities in Rwanda, including the transportation and
traffic master plan.
Innovation Used :
Due to the scope of these cities, it was decided to make use of Visum macro-
simulation software. Trips were generated based on predicted population
and employment numbers, and locations. From this it was possible to
determine the impact on the future road network. Proposals could also be
provided on where additional road reserve needs to be put in place, to
accommodate future expansion of roads, as these cities grow.
