One of the main reasons that I chose to create the these lesson plans and focus them around
the standard of applying interpersonal skills in personal and professional environments to communicate
effectively, is because I believe in the importance of quality communication skills and also integrating
the 4Cs into the classroom. As juniors and seniors prepare to leave high school and enter into
adulthood, I think that many of those students lack the skills communicate effectively, both in personal
and professional environments.
The textbook I chose for the readings are an appropriate Lexile range for this age group. I think
that it is important to familiarize the students with what interpersonal communication skills are, both
verbal and nonverbal. The reading and activities provide the students the opportunity to gain an
understanding of these skills. I chose to incorporate both a job researching activity and mock interview
to allow students both choice in the activity and a chance to experience a real interview. The first
interview involves a guest (another teacher) coming to the classroom. The second interview involves a
Skype interview with a business professional in the community. I chose to do both versions of the
interview because I think that it is important for students to experience a Skype interview.
Following the guest interviews, students will be participating in a mock interview with the
teacher. They will be given a list of possible interview questions and interview rubric prior to their
interview. Following the interview, students will be instructed to complete a one-page reflection on
their interview experience.
