Figure 2.36 Effect of slenderness ratio on the stress-strain curve [122]

Sandwich composite of E-glass/vinyl ester with Corecell A800 core was

investigated under high velocity impact using SHPB apparatus. It was observed that
the impact damage in the form of hole was most prominent on the exit face sheet in

comparison to the damage to the core and impact face sheet. Also, energy absorption

of the identical tested specimens was found to be higher under high velocity impact
compared to low velocity drop weight test [123].

Lee and Kim [124] studied on the material behaviour under high strain rate and
extreme loading conditions. The response of the material in dynamic condition is very

crucial to realize, particularly in the applications such as seismic loadings,

transportation, nuclear power plants, forging and rolling. SHPB was used to
investigate the dynamic deformation of the aluminium alloys (Al2024-T4, Al6061-T6

and Al7075-T6) and PMMA under high strain rate compressive loadings with the
                                                       -1
                                             -1
                   strain-rate between 1800 s to 8000 s . Results showed that stress-strain curve highly
dependent on the strain-rates applied and types of material used. The aluminium grade
                                                                                                 -1
Al7075-T6 exhibited the highest compressive stress at strain-rate 2000 s in
                   comparison with Al2024-T4 and Al6061-T6.
