Presentation structure
Prepare a short (3-5 minutes) presentation on one of the following topics. Clearly
distinguish the three basic parts – introduction, main body, closing.
You first day at school: as a pupil or as a teacher
Characteristics of a good teacher
To be or not to be a teacher?
Children: a blessing or a disaster?
Government support to education in CR
Electronic and classical books – pros and cons.
Your own topic.
Presentation as a journey
To develop an understandable structure of your talk, imagine your presentation this way:
You, as a presenter, are a leader of a group of people (audience) who are to get from
point A to point B. Help them.
At the beginning tell them where you are going and why you are going there. Invite them
for the journey, show them the plan of your trip. During the way describe your progress
and surroundings, and at the end of the journey look back where you have just been
going.
Applied this model on the presentation, it means: Organize your presentation in a logical
manner and integrate it with your visual aids - provide structure and framework for the
information you will present. Indicate the structure at the very beginning so that the
audience knows what they can expect.
Illustrate - help listeners to visualize, to find relations and possible impacts of your findings.
Provide your “fellow travellers” a graphical support, which means in this case graphs,
figures, photos, real objects, etc.
Use various means – make your journey attractive. Use different methods and means
both in the preparation and delivery of your presentation. You don´t want you fellow
travellers to fall asleep during the way because you wouldn´t get to the aim together.
Your task is to bring the whole group to the goal point, not only you.
However, for different travellers (understand “audiences”) the journey should be
different. With some you will have to walk slowly, with others you should only go along
certain paths, and still with others you are to require top performance, otherwise they are
not interested.
