CHAPTER 6            PRESENTATION ASSESSMENT

           1 h

                  Learning Objectives
                  After studying of this chapter, you will be able:

                        To analyse a presentation and assess its individual aspects;
                       To see your own presentation from a distance and deal with each aspect
                         separately;
                       Based on the previous point, to increase the efficiency of your
                         presentation.

                  Effective presenters know very well that communication is both intellectual and
                  emotional. Presenting good ideas is one part of the task, the other is to gain and
                  maintain the audience’s attention and to impress them. What you can do in this
                  point is to:

                  - Show enthusiasm for your subject. The audience will forgive the speaker a lot
                     if he/she shows enthusiasm. If you emit positive energy and it can be seen that
                     you are interested in the topic, the listeners will mostly response in the same
                     way - positively.

                  - Pay attention to your voice and body language during the presentation.
                     Don´t behave in the way which may seem impolite, overconfident or even
                     offensive.

                  Effective oral presentation in a nutshell
                  There are several aspects you should consider for the time of presentation itself
                  (delivery).

                  6:21)

                  1. Speaker´s appearance. First impressions influence the audience’s attitudes to
                      you. Think about your appearance and avoid extremes. Dress appropriately
                      for the occasion, i.e. in the style the other participants do, either in a more
                      formal, or casual style. Avoid eccentricity, don´t try to be exceptional and
                      remembered as “the person in the strange clothing” or something similar.

                  2. Notes. Never read from a manuscript word by word. When the worst comes
                      to the worst, the “safety net” in the form of notes can reduce your anxiety

                                                                                                     35
