GLOSSARY OF TERMS

                                USED BY THE HOSE INDUSTRY

                                                     Chapter 10

The reader is cautioned that the following Glossary of Terms contains words and expressions as
generally understood by persons familiar with hose industry terminology; however, such words and
expressions should not be relied upon as the sole or precise meaning of any particular term under all
                circumstances.

A adhesive coating: a layer applied to any
abrasion: a wearing away by friction. product surface to increase its adherence to an
                                                                adjoining surface.
abrasion tester: a machine for determining the
quantity of material worn away by friction aftercure: a continuation of the process of
under specified conditions. vulcanization after the cure has been carried to
the desired degree and the source of heat
ABS: American Bureau of Shipping. removed.
accelerated life test: a method designed to afterglow: in fire resistance testing, the red
approximate in a short time the deteriorating glow persisting after extinction of the flame.
                 effects obtained under normal service
conditions. aging: changes in physical properties over a
                                                                period of time.
accelerator: a compounding ingredient used air bomb: a chamber capable of holding
with a curing agent to increase the rate of compressed air heated to an elevated
                 vulcanization. temperature.
acid resistant: having the ability to withstand air bomb aging: a means of accelerating
the action of identified acids within specified changes in the physical properties of rubber
limits of concentration and temperature. compounds by exposing them to the action of
activator: a compounding ingredient used to air at an elevated temperature and pressure.
increase the effectiveness of an accelerator. air checks: the surface markings and
depressions which occur due to air trapped
adapter: the accessory part which can between the material being cured and the mold
complete the connection between a hose fitting or press surface.
and another fluid system component. Often, a
tube fitting connected to a hose assembly rather air cure: vulcanization without the application
than a tube assembly. of heat. See also: hot air cure.
adhesion: the strength of bond between cured air oven aging: a means of accelerating a
rubber surfaces or between a cured rubber change in the physical properties of rubber
surface and a non-rubber surface. compounds by exposing them to the action of
air at an elevated temperature at atmospheric
adhesion failure: (1) the separation of two pressure.
bonded surfaces at an interface by a force less ambient temperature: the temperature of the
than specified in a test method; (2) the atmosphere or medium surrounding an object

                 service conditions.
angle of lay: the angle developed at the
adhesive: a material which, when applied, will intersection of a structural element and a line
