Personal Teaching Philosophy
Within the academic setting, nurse educators are in a privileged position to shape the
lives of future nurses. For that reason, the nurse educator role is one that should be taken
seriously and practiced thoughtfully. It is valuable for educators to examine their own beliefs and
values about nursing, education, humanity, and environment (Valiga, 2016). Reflecting on these
concepts allows educators to formulate their own philosophy and utilize it as a guide for their
practice. This paper will serve as a statement of philosophy for this writer, addressing her views
of humanity, nursing as a profession, health, the learning environment, teaching and learning,
and the role of the educator and learner.
Humanity/Nursing/Health
All human beings deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, valued for their
differences, and treated fairly in all circumstances. Certainly, health is more than restoring
wellness; it is a process that encompasses health promotion and prevention. Nurses have the
unique opportunity to care for patients during some of their most vulnerable times. With this
privilege comes responsibility, and nurses need to be prepared to care, support, educate, and
advocate during these moments. By delivering care that is patient and family-centered, nurses
can honor individual differences and touch the lives of others in a meaningful way.
Learning Environment
The learning environment must be safe. Within all settings, educators are responsible for
creating and maintaining a safe environment, free from physical or emotional harm. The clinical
educator must also choose safe patient assignments and provide diligent supervision. In addition,
the learning environment must be equipped with adequate classroom space, provide functional
equipment for lab and simulation experiences, and accommodate diverse teaching strategies.
