Teaching and Learning
Learning is more than comprehension of subject matter; rather it is a life-long process
that allows for the development of mental, social, physical, and spiritual abilities (Iwasiw &
Goldenberg, 2015). In order to foster learning, it is essential to place students in the center of the
learning process, recognize their previous knowledge, and provide choices and flexibility within
an established framework (Iwasiw & Goldenberg, 2015, Valiga, 2016). This educator will
predominantly serve as a facilitator, encouraging and nurturing learner growth (Fenstermacher &
Soltis, 2009). However, due to the need for evaluation of safe practice and clinical competency,
this educator will utilize an executive approach to teaching when necessary.
Role of Educator and Student
Both the educator and student will be held to high personal, professional, and ethical
standards. The educator must possess and share knowledge, provide and receive feedback, act in
a manner that is ethical and moral, serve as a mentor and role-model, stay organized, and provide
diverse learning opportunities to meet the needs of learners. The student must be accountable,
self-motivated, and an active participant in the learning environment.
Conclusion
Developing a personal teaching philosophy is a crucial first step in becoming an effective
educator. Through the examination of personal beliefs and values, this writer has greater self-
awareness and a clear teaching philosophy for practice. With the future of nursing in the hands of
educators, it is imperative that these statements are reflected upon often and updated to meet the
ever-changing needs of student nurses and healthcare today.
