128 CHAPTER 6 HUMAN RESOURCE BUSINESS PROCESS

Withholding. We will explain the calculation to determine federal withholding in more
detail later when we create the query to calculate net pay. However, it is important to
acquaint yourself now with the structure of the table. The table lists the schedule for mar-
ried taxpayers first and then lists the schedule for single taxpayers. The second field,
TaxRate, provides the tax rate to be applied on wages that do not exceed ~heb ted
amount. The last field, UpperLimit, provides the upper limit for the bracke . FWT i the
amount to be added to the calculated tax to anive at the total withholding.
The UpperLimit field is important to us here because it will help us to determine
the TaxBracket to choose for each employee. By examining the table, we know that we
can look at the PayRate, MaritalStatus, and UpperLimit field and determine the
TaxBracket. For example, if an employee is manied and their PayRate is $3,750, his or
her TaxBracket would be M3. It is important to note that, for purposes of simplification
and illustration in this text, we have eliminated any possibility that an individual's
allowances will reduce their wages to a lower TaxBracket. In reality, this tax calculation
would involve far more steps than we include in this book. Our purpose is to provide you
with a sense of the complexity involved in building the tables, forms, and queries in this
cycle. Close the Withholding Table now.
                            26. Click on the Combo Box ~ icon and drag a rectangle below the AllowanceNo
and pay rate fields (both SPayRate and HPayRate). We want to look the values up in the
                      Withholding Table; therefore, click Next.

                            27. Select the Withholding Table from the pull-down menu and click Next.
                            28. Select TaxBracket and UpperLimit from the Available Fields window for
                      inclusion. Click Next.
                            29. Select the TaxBracket field for the sort order and click Next.
                            30. Deselect the recommendation to hide the primary key column. We want to have
the TaxBracket appear on the form. Click Next.
