President Medina praised the attitude of the private
sector to provide wage increases above cumulative
inflation, measured by the consumer price index, a
measure that improves the living conditions of wor-
kers.
“Forecasts for this year allow us to be optimistic. It is
expected that the growth trend will consolidated and
finish the year at around 5% of GDP growth, within
a framework of financial stability”, the President said
during his report.

FOCUSED MODEL ON FDI
The Dominican government is fully dedicated to stren-
gthening the foundations for a new productive stage,
committed to a development model that puts people
and communities at the center of all policies.
“We pledged to put the economy at the service of the
people, and never the other way around, and to have a
less vulnerable economic weave and a larger capacity
for the production of goods and services”; this is the
official goal of the government.
Official support for the most dynamic sectors of the
economy, in terms of facilitating the development of
projects, has been felt with more emphasis during the
past two years. The free zone sectors, industry, tourism
and energy have experienced the largest inflows of in-
vestment in the past year, and are expected to contri-
bute to the growth of the economy. President Danilo
Medina has publicly presented the main initiatives in
these areas, as well as the steps taken by the gover-
nment to encourage private, domestic and foreign en-
terprises to consolidate their business in the country.
TOURISM
“We cannot forget that a big part of our economy’s
dynamism revolves around tourism. So I’m happy to
announce that we are getting closer to achieving our
goal of consolidating tourism as one of our main dri-
vers of growth”, assured the Head of State.
Remember that in 2013, the Dominican Republic re-
ceived 5% more visitors, and the revenue from these
tourists increased by 9.8%. As for the number of crui-
se tourists, one of the target markets of the country,
increased by 6.4%.
During the past year, seven new hotels opened their
doors, adding 1,700 rooms to the existing inventory. In
that period, the Tourist Development Council approved
34 new projects, for an investment of over $1,300 mi-
llion dollars, to be implemented in the coming years.
It is estimated that the approved investments will con-
tribute more than 11,000 new rooms to the country’s
tourism sector, as well as create an estimated 16,000
new jobs, not counting those created in the construc-
tion phase.
