                                                                                  “We cannot forget that a big part of our economy’s
                                                                                  dynamism revolves around tourism. So I’m happy to
                                                                                  announce that we are getting closer to achieving our
                                                                                  goal of consolidating tourism as one of our main dri-
                                                                                  vers of growth”, assured the Head of State.
                                                                                  Remember that in 2013, the Dominican Republic re-
                                                                                  ceived 5% more visitors, and the revenue from these
                                                                                  tourists increased by 9.8%. As for the number of crui-
                                                                                  se tourists, one of the target markets of the country,
                                                                                  increased by 6.4%.
                                                                                  During the past year, seven new hotels opened their
                                                                                  doors, adding 1,700 rooms to the existing inventory. In
                                                                                  that period, the Tourist Development Council approved
                                                                                  34 new projects, for an investment of over $1,300 mi-
                                                                                  llion dollars, to be implemented in the coming years.
                                                                                  It is estimated that the approved investments will con-
                                                                                  tribute more than 11,000 new rooms to the country’s
                                                                                  tourism sector, as well as create an estimated 16,000
                                                                                  new jobs, not counting those created in the construc-
                                                                                  tion phase.
