Mining is an area of such importance, that the Government
decided to create a Ministry of Energy and Mines, which was
created by the Congress this year, on the recommendation
of President Danilo Medina.
MINING AS A SOURCE OF DEVELOPMENT
The Minister of Energy and Mines, Pelegrín Castillo Semán,
has expressed that the country must overcome the “pessi-
mism” on the development of the existing mineral resources
in the national geography and favors that this development
is executed in a transparent, secure and sustainable way.
Castillo Semán announced that the institution in charge is
employed at a process of multisectorial consultation with
universities and experts in renewable and not renewable re-
sources, in metallic and not metallic mining. He emphasized
the contributions that the mining has done to the develop-
ment of the Dominican economy.
“The attentive observer of the national reality can verify with
ease that the mining has constituted in a real prop of the
macroeconomic stability, for its important contributions to
the development of the investments, the exports and the
improvement of the credit of the Republic”, affirmed the
Minister.
According to its perception, everything indicates that the
best possibilities to future will rest, mostly, in the execution
of an agenda of energy safety and of the rational use of its
natural resources.
Castillo Semán expressed that the Constitution and the Na-
tional Development Strategy established the conditions in
which the exploitation of mining deposits can be performed,
and with the creation of the Department of Energy and Mi-
nes and the National Geologic Service is expressed a com-
mitment with the institutional strengthening of the sector. It
recounted that the technical staff of the organism concluded
that “the PNUD recognizes the importance that the extrac-
tive industries possess for the economy of the developing
countries. In the Dominican case, this might be a viable
alternative as long as the sector attaches to the existing
worldwide standards of sustainable development, focused
on the people and guarantee that the benefits it generates
outstands the environmental liability.
