munications?
The telecommunications sector trusts in the Indotel and in the
Dominican Government. Nobody comes to a country to invest if
feels that the legal certainty is not favorable, or feels that there
are problems. They come here because there are democratic
guarantees so that they operate without problems.
What are the perspectives of the sector?
The most important challenge is that the market, with the
merger of two of the biggest phone companies, maintains its
competitiveness, arisen from the regulations.
WIDE BAND INFRASTRUCTURE
As part of the current investment climate and the expansion
of the service of fixed and mobile wide band, the Dominican
Republic contemplates, through the Indotel, to develop a
national optical fiber backbone network that will project the
country as an absolute leader in telecommunications in the
Caribbean region.
The project is the process of negotiations held by national
and foreign technical staff. It consists in the construction of
a optical fiber backbone network that will communicate the
main municipality of the 31 provinces and the National Dis-
trict.The entire investment in this network would be US$62
million, of which US$30 million, for the first stage, would be
financed by the World Bank.
