ERASING CHARCOAL

Thickly applied charcoal
quickly overcomes a plastic
eraser A warm (soft and tacky)
putty eraser is more effective,
as is fresh (unbuttered!)
bread. Here, I used a plastic
eraser effectively on thinly
applied charcoal.

Lifting out This detail shows
an example of where I used the
lifting-out technique demonstrated
opposite to draw flashes of
lightning against rain clouds.
Different tones seen throughout
the main drawing on pp.212-13
were made by altering the
pressure applied to the charcoal.

8 . T O R T I L L O N : This is a tight roll of
paper used to blend charcoal, graphite,
pastels, or any other dry media. Layers
can be peeled away to refresh its surface.
Cotton swabs also work.

9. PEN: Any fine pen or pencil can be used
to draw on the back of masking tape when
lifting out. Here we used a ballpoint. Lift out
broader marks with a larger implement.

10. MASKING TAPE: An invaluable
resource, sold in several widths. Use high
quality (very sticky) to fix paper to walls
and boards. Use cheaper (less sticky)
for lifting out.
