ERICH KETTLEHUT FUTURE FICTIONS
Influential film art director;
draftsman, and model-maker In
t h e p r e p a r a t i o n o f Metropolis,
Kettlehut and his c o - a r t director
Otto Hunte, together with
cinematographer Karl Freund,
used forced perspective camera
techniques to amplify the
magnitude of buildings in
relation to human characters.
Brush and ink This is a dramatic
drawing from a film that shaped
the history of world cinema.
Kettlehut drew using a fine and
relatively dry brush dipped in black,
gray, and white ink on brown-gray
paper. Working on toned paper
such as this gives an artist greater
scope for dramatic lighting effects
than if they work on white paper.
