Fungsi sosial

Dalam kehidupan nyata, kita menceritakan suatu peristiwa, kejadian,
atau kegiatan karena ada maksud tertentu yang hendak dicapai. Tidak
ada orang menceritakan sesuatu tanpa tujuan. Berbagi pengalaman,
menunjukkan kebanggaan, mengambil hikmah dan pelajaran, atau sekedar
melaporkan apa yang terjadi adalah beberapa maksud yang biasanya dicapai
dengan mendeskripsikan obyeknya. Maksud atau fungsi sosial yang
hendak dicapai itulah yang akan menentukan bentuk (struktur teks dan
unsur kebahasaan) untuk membangun teksnya. Perhatikan kedua teks di
bawah ini.

I’m proud of what you did during the celebration of the Scout Day.
On Monday, when most people were still in bed, all of you were ready
to have a long walk to the mountain. Exactly at four we started from our
school. We helped each other. The boys carried the heavy things. The girls
gave us nice breakfast. They also carried the waste in plastic bags and
threw them at the right place. We got at the spot before sunrise. We could
see the sun rise, because the sky was clear. It was very beautiful, wasn’t it?
And I think now you know eah other better, don’t you?

But we can also learn something from Udin and Beni’s experience.
Do you remember what they did on Tuesday afternoon. They met a old
man. He was very weak. He told them that he got lost and he did not know
how to go back to the main road. Without telling us the teachers and the
head of their group, they led the man to the main road. When they were
far enough from the camping site, the man suddenly passed out. And of
course they could not help him themselves. It took a while before we could
help the sick man in the right way. Luckily it was not too late.

Untuk pemaparan tentang program kegiatan Pramuka yang baru saja
selesai dilaksanakan dengan teks pertama, Pembina pramuka memilih
fakta-fakta yang memang pantas dibanggakan seperti kegiatan-kegiatan
yang mengembangkan kebersamaan, yang menimbulkan kesenangan,
yang menghasilkan prestasi, dsb. Untuk mengambil hikmah atau pelajaran
pada teks kedua, dia menguraikan fakta-fakta yang menimbulkan masalah
yang timbul dan kemudian fakta yang menyebabkan masalah tersebut
akhirnya dapat diatasi.
