Chronology
History of the Department:
1930’s External Trade Statistics was compiled
by the Customs Department for the
three regions known as the Federated
Malay States, Unfederated Malay States
and the Straits Settlements. At that
time, the Headquarters of the Customs
Department was in Singapore. For the
states in Borneo, external trade data
was compiled by the British Government
which was under the control of the
Colony of North Borneo.
Data collection in the Federation of
Malaya and Borneo focused on the
production of commodities such as
rubber, spices, tin, coal and others. The
British recognised the importance of
statistics as a key element in the planning
and administration of its empire.
