Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) strengthens the law on creating a barrier-
free Ontario for people with disabilities. Mount Sinai Hospital is committed to meeting the
requirements of the Ontario Human Rights Code and the AODA and providing an equitable,
accessible, and respectful environment that is free from discrimination. This includes accommodating
human rights related needs so that individuals have equal access to all of the services, goods and
facilities available through Mount Sinai Hospital.

There are several policies that explain how Mount Sinai Hospital will provide this environment. These
include: Providing Care for People with Disabilities; Service Animals, Therapy Animals and Patient
Pets; Emergency Response Planning for Employees with Disabilities; Assistive Devices Policy; and
Accommodation Policy and Procedures. These policies along with supporting documents, will give
you the tools you need to be fully compliant with Mount Sinai Hospital’s philosophy in providing an
        equitable, accessible and respectful environment.

Below are some tips to remember when
         communicating with people with disabilities:

         • Focus on the person, not the disability.
         • When booking appointments, ask if the patient requires
             accommodation to access our services.
          • Approach the person from the front.
         • Speak directly to the person even if an attendant is
             present.

         • Speak in a normal tone of voice.

         • Treat the person with dignity and respect.
         • Listen, clarify and verify to ensure you understand their

             needs.
          • Ask how you can help.
         • Do not interact with or distract a service animal.
