Abstract
In Japan, buildings get serious damage caused by typhoons every year. One of the examples is the roof
blowing off. Also, we have another wind problem, turbulent flow causing discomfort around building,
solved by planting tall trees to decrease the wind speed. We thought that the roof peeling off could be
solved by the approach of decrease the wind speed. The wind-protecting effect of tall plants are enough
researched by many experiments already, but still, the effect for upper force is unclear. So in this study,
we investigate whether the windbreak trees have the effect of reducing damage to the roof blowing off.
The effect is caused by the change in the distance between the windbreak plants and the building is
observed by the wind tunnel experiments. We made a model of a simple building at 1/50. The plants
are reproduced by using a metal mesh, a well-known method to replace it in the wind tunnel. We
prepared two metal meshes of different heights. In the experiments, the correspondence between the
Coefficient of drag and lift represented as Cd and Cl at the change in mesh height and the distance from
the model is confirmed. Cd is sought to make the phenomenon easier to understand. As a result, we
success clarify the changes in Cd and Cl show the different tendencies in each condition. This result
made it possible to find out the relationship between windbreak planting and hoisting force and to
suggest the ideal conditions to avoid the roof blowing off.
