IFA intern

               Farewell, Dr. Randall Herz!

                         Dear Randall,

At the end of this school year, the English department will have
to say goodbye to a valued colleague who has been with us since
2005. Dr Randall Herz joined our IFA English department as an
addition to our area studies and humanities teams, bringing know-
ledge of his native New York and extensive background in the
world of arts to our students.

Over the years, Dr Herz taught all manner of courses at all levels,
ranging from translation in the second language in BFS Stufe 1 to
specialized translation in FAK III, American studies in both schools
and, honestly, basically anything we asked him to teach.

This flexibility and willingness to jump in when needed made him
54 a real and much appreciated asset, especially since it extended to
    54
the extras, such as supervising exams or standing in for absent
colleagues. And all that without complaint.

As a teacher, Dr Herz made up for being the occasionally absent-
minded professor by being thorough in his materials, patient and
fair in his treatment of students and kind to all in his soft-spo-
ken, engaging way. He was especially devoted to his ‘Geisties’.
We’ll miss the sight of him whizzing up to IFA on his bike, wind-
blown and with sportily rolled up trousers.

After these 17 years of faithful service to IFA, Dr Herz, is taking
leave of us, not to enter what would be a well-earned retirement
of relaxation and ease, but to embark on a new and exciting chal-
lenge in the form of a full-time research position. We wish him
all the best in this new endeavour.

                                                                              Peggy Davies-Brown
