KI NEWS JCI?

2017 JCI Mauritius TOYP – by Marie Luce Chang-Ko 25

The Outstanding Young Person Award (TOYP) was an event designed to

showcase the extraordinary young people in Mauritius. It takes courage to
act differently than the crowd but to standout requires a whole new level of

courage. It was an honor to be part of the team who set up the event. It is

with events such as these that JCI empower its members. There is only so
much you can learn by taking a project management course or event

planning course, the real learning part comes when you go the field and

     taking on the spot decisions.

EDIKER POU ERADIKER – by Marie Luce Chang-Ko

If I had to award a project which best encompasses the crucial role

of NGOs in society, it would definitely be this one. The beauty of this
project is that it touches Domestic Violence, a very sensitive, which

affects all levels of society and the project bridges the gap between

the law, victims and the law enforcers.

Domestic Violence has been a problem for milleniums and

fortunately for the victims, the laws have changed to better protect
them. What has not changed is that the victims and law enforcers do

not master the law and the ones who do are the lawyers and they do
   not
come cheap which is a problem for the lower-incomes. The
second problem is that there many other NGOs and hotlines out

there to support the victims but how can this be of any use if the

victims do not know 1) they exist, 2) how to contact them, 3) the law
   and 4) their rights.

This is why projects such as Ediker Pou Eradiker are so important. The law is only a piece of paper if nobody knows their rights.

The most beautiful part, in my opinion, came during question time at the Roche-Bois event when an attendee asked what

happens when a victim does not get a pension and husband cannot afford to give her one, and the Mafubo representative
answered: "The victim will have to learn to stand on her two feet and support herself".

Event hosted by: JCI City Plus
