A Job with a Difference
In black racing suits, they are seen racing along narrow trails and rugged tracks on their motor bikes. No,
they are not racers. 1. B They are health nurses . They use on their motor bikes to deliver
life-saving treatment and health advice to rural communities in West Africa.
Many lives are lost to treatable diseases in Africa. In many cases, the vaccines and medicines are available
but fail to reach patients because transport system is unreliable. This made British racing journalist, Barry
Coleman, and his wife, Andrea, to set up RFH or Riders for Health. 2. A RFH is a social project
that improves healthcare delivery across rural Africa . This organisation trains healthcare givers
knowledge on transport maintenance, so that they can reach out to people in rural areas.
It all began when Barry visited Somalia in the late 1980s. He noticed that many new-looking motorbikes
and other vehicles are not usable because of poor maintenance. In the Ministry of Health, many motorcycles
and ambulances are broken down because nobody has been trained to repair them and there is no supply
chain of parts. 3. E There is also no knowledge of transport maintenance . He saw women dying in
childbirth because healthcare givers could not reach out to them. Thus, he set up RFH to enable healthcare
givers to give better healthcare service.
