Application example: Combining foresight and design thinking to Foresight
shape a vision of future mobility
                                                                               Open Autonomous
By combining the mindsets, we can develop tangible concepts of the data driving
future that are custom-tailored to the user. The feeling of owner- Smart cities
ship—which is currently still a strong feature (e.g., possession of
cars) but will very likely change due to new mobility concepts—can
be depicted in a scenario about future mobility (through personas,
needfinding, etc.). However, this transition becomes a reality only Electrical The future
when the infrastructure of cities is geared to the new concepts, vehicles
offering the user the best possible experience. On the basis of move- of mobility
ment data (big data/analytics), it is possible to determine the optimal Artificial Trends
locations for concepts in terms of Car2go and Bike2Go, for bus stops intelligence
and point-to-point connections, for instance. Zones and driving lanes Design
for private mobility service providers (e.g., Uber, Lyft, Didi Kuaidi, etc.) thinking
and public mobility services (bus, train, tram, etc.) are also inferred Ownership
from it. Large parking lots are turned into green areas; the old parking Connected
spaces along the streets become the new waiting lines for auton- car
omous vehicles. By actively making possibilities for parking scarce
in the cities and optimizing a range of offers of limitless mobility,
the quality of life in the cities will increase in the medium term.
Thus smart mobility will be a relevant pillar of smart city initiatives,
which are connected to the respective mobility concepts through
sensors, smart video surveillance, and video analytics with the goal of
controlling such complex systems. Whereas models such as “access
over ownership” provided only a weak trend signal only a short while
ago, they have now developed into a macro trend that was picked up Mega
by many companies and affects numerous areas. An emerging micro Smart cities
trend is “decentralization of everything”—as can be seen in the first Access over ownership Macro
blockchain initiatives or free-floating parking spaces. From Singapore Micro
to Berlin, everybody is talking about the mega trend of smart cities. Decentralization of
                                                              everything
