TOTAL PRODUCTIVE MAINTENANCE
7.4.1 BREAKDOWN MAINTENANCE
Breakdown maintenance refers to equipment breakdowns occuring before any
maintenance has been performed. This is also referred to as unscheduled
maintenance.
Breakdown maintenance is practiced in industry today. Sometimes it’s necessary,
especially on low cost components where the equipment is of an auxiliary nature and
not directly related to production. If the component that is down doesn’t cause an
interruption in production, repairs can be effected without interruption of the flow of
materials. If the equipment doesn’t endanger safety, preventive maintenance may not
be practiced. The cost of performing preventive maintenance may not be practiced.
The cost of performing preventive maintenance should be considered in all
applications before it is initiated to ensure that the cost of the program does not exceed
the equipment costs. When considering larger, more expensive components, care
must be taken to figure in cost of probable damage to related components, along with
the cost of the lost production time and wasted man hours.
