308 THE HISTORY OF THE QUR'ANIC TEXT
                                                      -t ... JJ '" ,/ c. '" ~ .. -l" ".... ,/
                                                15~ l>'~ \, ..' '1" • '1' ~ '1\ .: J.f=~ 'j'}.
                                                    ? j)~ oJ)")! " . J_~ .,,, 7
"And whatever [wrong) any human commits rests upon himselfalone; and
nobearer qf burdens shall be made to bear another's burden."

The Trinity and salvation through Christ, the very essences of Christian
doctrine, find only outright dismissalin the Qur'an, while the Biblicalstories
present therein are more a matter of history than ideology.

"Say: He is Allah, the One and Only; Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; He
begets not, nor is He begotten; andthere is none like unto Him."

So where exactly does this counterfeiting manifest itself? And con-
cerning appropriations from the OT (as alleged by Wansbrough, Noldeke,
and others), why should the Prophet seek to emulate a Scripture portraying
Yahweh as a tribal God, affiliated not even with the Samaritans or Edomites
but solely with Israel? At the very opening of the Book we find:
                                              17~OJ ~i ~j ~.4;Ji O~Ji ~Ji:&l ~,
"In the Name qf Allah, MostGracious, MostMerciful. Praise be to Allah,
the Cherisher andSustainer qf the JIVorlds."

A universal invocation to Allah, transcending tribes and races and based
only on the precepts of faith. One cannot pluck such a rich mango from
the prickly arms of a parched cactus.

                                                   5. Deliberate Distortion qf the Qy.r'an

A fourth gateway isthe falsificationof the Holy Book itself We have already
critically examined Goldziher and Arthur Jeffery's theories on variants,
but there are other notables as well.

                                             i. Flugel's Attempted Distortion of the Qur'an

Printing the concordance of the Qur'an in 1847, Flugel also tried his hand
at an Arabic text of the Qur'an and succeeded in conjuring up a product

                                    15 Qur'an 6:164.
                                    16 Qjir'an 112:1-4.
                                    17 Qur'an 1:1-2.
