                                                               Mount Vesuvius erupts
                                                               When the volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted in
                                                               79 CE, it buried the Roman city of POMPEII that
                                                               lay nearby, but the ash and molten rock strangely
                                                               preserved the city, too. After excavation from 1798
                                                               onward, the town was able to tell its story again.
                                                               Whole streets, houses, people, and even pieces
                                                               of art were uncovered, perfectly preserved in
                                                               the rock, meaning Pompeii’s terrible disaster
                                                               helped us better understand the Roman world.
