things that you might want to consider, some obvious, some maybe not so
         much.
They are an expensive item ours were just short of £1k so more than you
might expect to pay for a home one but they are of high quality and cus-
         tom made.
They are also very heavy! If you want a quick look beneath the boards you
need someone to hold them up and then it’s still not easy. I’m considering
cutting the access boards so that I only need to lift one mattress especially
to check the stuffing box and water stop cock.

The size and weight mean that you need to consider where they will be
kept over winter if not using the boat. Last year we put them in the saloon
but this year we will leave them in the aft cabin but protect the bottom
end with plastic just in case the rudder tops leak again. We have a dehu-
midifier left on over winter so don’t suffer any damp problems.

We have fitted anti condensation matting on
the base and sides of the mattresses as a pre- Mike & Jill Howard
         caution. Star Dancer S110

                                   Gruesome note!

Among the most astonishing stories is that of Bertrand Le Broc who,
at the 1992/1993 Vendée Globe, had to stitch up his tongue – which
had been severed by a rope – all alone, using a little pocket mirror.
He then followed the instructions of a doctor on land by telex.
