Professor: Where are you from?

ご出身は？

Mei: I was born in Shanghai and moved to the US when I was in middle
school.

Shanhai de umareta n desu kedo, chūgaku no toki Amerika ni
hikkoshita n desu.
上海で生まれたんですけど、中学の時アメリカに引っ越した
んです。

Professor: Is that so? When did you come to Japan?

Ā, sō desu ka. Nihon ni wa itsu kita n desu ka.
ああ、そうですか。日本にはいつ来たんですか。

Mei: It was September last year, so it will be a year (now). It (the year)
went by so fast!
Kyonen no ku-gatsu desu kara, ichi-nen ni narimasu. Atto iu ma
deshita.

去年の九月ですから、一年になります。あっという間でし
た。

Professor: How do you like it in Japan? (Lit: How is life in Japan?)
Nihon no seikatsu wa dō desu ka.
日本の生活は、どうですか。

Mei: I’m enjoying it. At first, I didn’t understand the language and it was

hard.
Tanoshi’i desu. Hajime wa kotoba ga wakaranakute, komari
mashita kedo.
