Exploring Groningen
Some of the country’s most attractive and historically interesting
castles, or borgs, are in the Groningen region: the medieval
Fraeylemaborg in Slochteren, Menkemaborg in Uithuizen and
the charming Verhildersum in Leens. The natural area around the
Lauwersmeer is particularly suitable for rambling. Not far from here,
in Pieterburen, is a famous refuge for seals. Ter Apel, which is on Wensum, one of the prettiest villages
the province’s eastern boundary, is a magnificent in Groningen
medieval monastery. Groningen itself (see pp284–9)
has much to offer, including the peaceful Wa d d e n z e e Eemshaven
Prinsenhof, with its beautiful gardens, and the Roodeschool
ultra-modern Groninger Museum (see
pp288–9), which houses collections that LAUWERSOOG PIETERBUREN UITHUIZEN E e m s
