338 NOR THERN AND EASTERN NE THERLANDS
1 Paleis Het Loo
The Stadholder William III built the elegant palace of Het
Loo in 1692 as a hunting lodge. For generations, the
Orange family used it as a summer residence. Its pomp
and splendour have led to it being dubbed the “Versailles
of the Netherlands”. Its main architect was Jacob Roman
(1640–1716); the interior and the gardens were designed
by Daniel Marot (1661–1752). The severe Classical façade
belies the ornate interior. After intensive restoration work
was carried out, the palace is now open as a museum. Coat of Arms (1690) of William
and Mary, future king and
queen of England.
. Bedroom of the Stadholder William III (1713)
The wall coverings and draperies in this bedroom are
of rich orange damask and purple silk.
