Queen’s Garden Paleis Het Loo The Formal Gardens
Lower Garden
When the formal gardens on the land
behind the palace were reconstructed,
garden designers based their designs
on old illustrations, prints, documents
and plans. In the 18th century, the
original ornamental gardens had been
grassed over. In 1983, the intricate
patterns of the original gardens were
restored and planting began. The Het
Loo gardens are typical of a formal
garden in the 17th century in which
the ideal was the harmonization of
Upper Garden art and nature.
