40 INTRODUCING ROME
Rome During Unification
Under the French Emperor Napoleon, Italy had a brief taste of
unity, but by 1815 it was once more divided into many small
states and papal rule was restored in Rome. Over the next 50
years, patriots, led by Mazzini, Garibaldi, and others, struggled
to create an independent, unified Italy. In 1848 Rome was
briefly declared a Republic, but Garibaldi’s forces were driven
out by French troops. The French continued to protect the Extent of the City
pope, while the rest of Italy was united as a kingdom under 1870 Today
Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy. In 1870, troops stormed the city,
and Rome became capital of Italy.
